When I was ten or so, after school when the other kids went to the playground, I rushed home and ran downstairs to my dad's basement workshop. There was a beautiful old oak workbench there where I made "traptions" – short for contraptions. "Traptions" were made of rubber bands and batteries, pieces of wood and wire and glue. I am now the designer for Saloom Furniture Company, a company my wife Linda and I started over 25 years ago. I've spent the past 25 years designing and building furniture for the masses, while my true passion has always been modern design.
When I turned 56, I decided to embrace this passion and I designed and built my first Peter Francis piece. I made no compromises in designing Peter Francis - I wanted aggressive geometry, but without the hardness and gloss I so often see in modern furnishings. We are using the best solid maple and time honored woodworking techniques. I strove to make each piece truly functional - comfortable chairs, durable finishes and sturdy construction.
I am very proud of this new work. We are making the new Peter Francis pieces here in our factory in Massachusetts and meeting a whole new group of modern enthusiasts. We are having fun making furniture that has meaning for us, we hope that you enjoy it, too.
